The cadre has been identified as self-styled corporal Dewal Kumar Dutta, a resident of Assam’s Jorhat district. At the time of surrender, he was carrying a Chinese-made pistol as well as four rounds of live ammunition, which were handed over to the authorities.
Dutta had joined the proscribed outfit in March of 2017 and was assigned as a personal bodyguard to ULFA leader Drishti Rajkhowa. In November 2018, he was nabbed by the Jorhat Police and after getting free on bail in July this year, had promptly re-joined the outfit. According to reports, he had been trained at the Meghalaya-Bangladesh border and had committed acts of terror on behalf of both the GNLA and ULFA (I).
Meanwhile, the army has handed the ultra over to the Joypur authorities.
