New York, September 8, 2019:

Canadian teen Bianca Andreescu became Canada’s first-ever Grand Slam singles champion on Saturday with a hard-earned 6-3, 7-5 win over 23-time major champion Serena Williams, in the US Open final, which is one of the topmost prizes in the sport of lawn tennis.

With this defeat, Williams has lost her fourth straight Grand Slam final on the trot to again deny her a record-equaling 24th Slam title.

The 37-year-old Williams suffered a second finals loss in a row at Flushing Meadows. Her 2018 defeat against Naomi Osaka is best remembered for a furious tirade against chair umpire Carlos Ramos.

Somewhat remarkably, Andreescu wasn’t even born when Williams won her maiden Slam at the 1999 US Open.

Meanwhile, after Andreescu’s historic win, the hashtag #SheTheNorth has shot to the top of Canada’s trending topics on Twitter, as social media users reimagined the “We the North” slogan used by the Toronto Raptors during their NBA championship-winning run.

Congratulating her, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau wrote on Twitter, “You’ve made history and made a whole country very proud.”

The men’s final will be contested between the ‘Spanish bull’ Rafael Nadal, an 18-time major champ, and Russian ‘bad boy’ Daniil Medvedev, later today in Arthur Ashe stadium in New York.
