It is known that the curfew was promulgated till 8 am in the morning of July 23.
As per the statement of the police, yesterday night at around 8 pm, a mentally challenged person identified as Ahidul Islam, 35, attempted an attack on the general public with a sword in Nadichar, under Mahendraganj Police Station. As the police rushed into the site to tackle the situation, the person also attacked the police personnel and officer who were trying to stop him from inflicting harm on the general public.
The statement added, “In the process to catch hold of the person, one of the police personnel dropped his service rifle and while trying to recover, his rifle fell into the river. Ahidul Islam grabbed the service rifle and started to run away from the spot, therefore, SI E R Marak who was present at the place resorted to blank fire shooting to deter the person from carrying away the service rifle and from fleeing away.”
“However, the rumours were spreading that the police had fired upon Ahidul Islam, resulting in people converging at Mahendraganj Police Station, at 11 am and gheraoed the police station. They then started pelting stones which resulted in damage of many official vehicles including a fire tender of Meghalaya F&ES and Government Bolero. In order to avert any further deterioration of law and order the District Administration has promulgated section 144 CrPC in the Mahendraganj areas till 8 am of July 23,” it further added.
As per the official reports, the situation is under control and adequate force have been deployed in the area to prevent any untoward incident.
Further updates awaited.
