To set up a Regional Academic Centre for Space (RAC-S), the Gauhati University and Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), Department of Space have signed a bilateral, institutional agreement to carry out research and developmental projects related to technical aspects and programmatic needs of the Indian Space Programme.

According to a press release, the idea of establishing a direct linkage between ISRO and Gauhati University is meant to expand the role of Space research in teaching and educational systems, in the Northeast region in particular.
A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed today by Dr PV Venkitakrishnan, Director, CBPO, ISRO (Department of Space, Govt of India), Bengaluru and Prof Nani Gopal Mahanta, Registrar, GU in presence of Dr Mridul Hazarika, the Vice Chancellor of Gauhati University.
The august occasion was also graced by Prof BC Goswami, Vice Chancellor, Cotton University and representative from Institute of Advanced Studies in Science and Technology (IASST) besides faculty members, researchers and officials from Gauhati University.
