Guwahati, July 11, 2019:
In a major blow to the Congress party in Goa, a majority of the Congress party, i.e. 10 out of 15, have defected to the BJP party ahead of the monsoon session that begins on July 15.
The big blow the ‘grand old party’ had received in Karnataka has now hit the Congress in Goa on Wednesday with 10 of their 15 MLAs forming a separate group. With this, the BJP’s share in the 40-member Assembly has now risen to 27, while the Congress only has 5 MLAs.
The 10 Congress leaders met speaker Rajesh Patnekar asking for a separate sitting in the assembly.
The Congress had emerged as the single largest party with 17 MLAs in the 2017 assembly polls, but the oldest party in the country is now left with only five MLAs in Goa.
The 10 members of the Congress legislature party led by opposition leader Chandrakant Kavalekar have split from the party and have joined BJP.
Meanwhile, all the defected BJP MLAs left for Delhi late last night to meet Union Home Minister Amit Shah. Chief Minister Pramod Sawant is expected to carry out a cabinet reshuffle on Thursday.
