Guwahati, 11th January, 2019:
Assam police striked sedition charges against noted public intellectual and Sahitya Akademi awardee Hiren Gohain for a speech he delivered at a rally in Guwahati on January 7, opposing the Centre’s decision to pass the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016 in the Lok Sabha. The same sedition charges were also filed against RTI activist Akhil Gogoi, and Senior Journalist Manjit Mahanta for allegedly making secessionist remarks at the same event.
Following the charges Dr Gohain, Akhil Gogoi and Mahanta filed an anticipatory bail in the High Court on Friday. According to reports, the matter will come up for hearing at 2 pm at Guwahati High Court. It may be noted that a suo-moto case of Secession has been filed against Dr Hiren Gohain by the Latasil Police station on Thursday.
A part of Nagarik Samaj, a citizens’ group, Gohain is among a few noted names from the state to have recently filed a petition in the Supreme Court opposing the Bill. As stated by police, the recent uttering and public meetings held by Dr. Hiren Gohain against the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016 has been termed as supporting independence from India. It is this statement of seeking independence from India has been treated as a statement of secession. However, this statement created quite a buzz in the social media with people speaking for and against the intellectual for his statement.
However, the very news against the intellectual enraged the people of Assam. Students and several indigenous people of Assam with the intellectuals of Assam have stood with Dr Gohain challenging the move of the Latasil police and have condemned the police for secession allegations on the intellectual.
Moreover it can also be noted that, prominent social activist, Yogendra Yadav’s stand was impressive while heraised his voice for Dr Gohain. His tweet from his official twitter account says,
“This is preposterous! Scholars like Professor Gohain are national treasures. If Hiren Gohain and Akhil Gogoi are anti-national, then by that logic I am also anti-national and would like to be arrested. It would be an honour to be in jail with them!”
