Guwahati, December 22, 2018:

Former Meghalaya Chief Minister Mukul Sangma pulled no punches in slamming the opposition party NCC under Chief Minister Conrad Sangma. The Congress leader said that rampant mining has been taking place and the issue has been raised in the assembly several times. He alleged that the government has not taken any action against such illegal ‘rat-hole’ mining despite repeated warnings from his party.

It  is to be mentioned that the NDRF’s attempts to rescue more than 15 miners in a collapsed ‘rat-hole’ mine flooded by nearby Lytein river is still going on and divers are now searching for the miners. Chief Minister Conrad Sangma had said that it is not possible to put a full stop to illegal coal mining in the state as operations cover a huge area. He had assured, though, that authorities who will be alerted to location of such mines, will take prompt and strict action. The prime accused in the case, owner James Sukhlain, is absconding.
